Probably the longest and everlasting open air gallery in the world- and definately a unique attraction...The East Side Gallery, one of the last remains of the Berlin Wall and a colorful collection of political and poetic murals, is without question a historical place and an international memorial for freedom. Altogether is a 1.3km long, the gallery consists of approximately 106 paintings by artists from all over the world, painted on the east side of the Berlin Wall.
Immediately after the fall of the wall in 1989, the first painting was started by Christine Mac Lean, followed by paintings from Kasra Alavi, Kani Alavi, Jim Avignon, Thierry Noir, Ingeborg Blumenthal, Ignasi Blanch i Gisbert and others.
Over the time and due to weather, air pollution, vandalistic collectors, and simply time, the wall got extremely deteriorated and some of the colorful images created in 1989/90 are today hardly recognizable- many of the pictures have already had to undergo restoration.
Anyway, an Artist Initiative East for several years has been making an effort to preserve the East Side Gallery which is still able to give testimony to the hopes and effusive joy that was felt in Berlin after the Wall fell.

If I have a tip, it is to not walk too close to the wall when visiting, otherwise it is difficult to see the whole image. Time may not have been kind to the gallery as a whole, but constant additions to it enable it to seem not just a stagnent document of history, but also a continuously evolving gallery.
