Criticised from the very beginning, the project announced in 1994 in form of a competetition was finished in late 2004, taking 21 months to be build. The memorial consiting of 2,711 concrete blocks covering nearly 19,000 m2, all of different heights and structured in a grid pattern, designed by Peter Eisenman, an internationally renowned New York architect, was, amongst others, blamed by the the German organization "Roma and Sinti" for singling out the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, not mentioning the large number of murdered Roma and Sinti, Jehovah's Witnesses, homosexuals, communists and political prisoners. However, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is nevertheless a central place for remembrance and not least a place of warning - effecting everybody visiting in someway or another when moving through the wave-like patterns open to all sides. When visiting the memorial, located close to the Reichstag and the Brandenburger Gate, it is recommended to also climb down the stairs to the complementary underground Information Centre, offering background information spread across 800 sq. meters of exhibition space.
