Destroyed in a fire, devastated during the war, wrapped by Christo and Jeanne Claude- that's what can be called an eventful life, reflecting the turbulence of German history since the 19th century...However, the new Glass Dome (the old one had been blown up in 1945)has become one of the newest landmarks in the city, first the subject of great controversy. Altogether, the seat of the federal government got his former function back in 1999, after a five years lasting reconstruction and extension by the Architect Sir Norman Forster. Besides adding the accessible dome, he expressed his awareness of the big task to combine the building's history with its future function as a modern working parliament. However, the dome, covered with 3000 m² of glass and situated 24m up on the roof, can be climbed - offering a stunning view of the city. Tip: Best to come early to avoid the queues - or book a table in the restaurant - and jump the queue altogether....

the lovely Reichstag! :-D go up in the last group at about 10pm, then you can linger up there looking out over the city lights while everyone else gradually leaves to go home, until you feel like you have the whole place all to yourself...

Definitely worth a visit - even just to see the architecture (Thank you Sir Norman Foster) of the dome. Some great views from the top, too!

What a great combination. meet the past. good work from Norman Forster. It's a pity that playing soccer on the green is forbidden...
