Berlin's most beautiful avenue, named for its linden or lime trees which line the grassed pedestrian mall - Best to start from Schlossbrücke bridge, to be awarded with the highlight of this awe-inspiring walk right at the end .... Unter den Linden, originally a bridle path, became more and more built up, mirroring the rising splendor of the monarchy and the new architectural style, today impressing with its buildings, many of which have been restored and reconstructed since the Fall of the Wall.
After crossing the bridge, look left to see the remainings of the "Palast der Republik" (Palace of the Republic), about to be taken down and already closed in the nineties due to its intoxication with asbestos; the square in front, the "Schlossplatz", is about to be redesigend, most possibly including the rebuilding of the former castle; turn right to gaze at the "Berlin Cathedral", constructed in the eclectic Wilhelmine style at the end of the 19th century and fronted by the "Lustgarten", once used as parade grounds; walk on, passing by the Humbold University on the right hand side, Berlin's oldest university, founded in 1810 and once the Palace for Prince Heinrich; opposite, the "Forum Fridericianum",the intellectual and artistic centre of the monarchy consisting of the "Staatsoper", the Academy Library, St. Hedwig's Cathedral right next to the "Bebelplatz" with the "Book-Burning Memorial" will, without much doubt, leave you impressed by what was a wasteland of ruins at the end of the war.
At the end of the boulevard, across the "Pariser Platz", you will face Berlin's most famous landmark, the "Brandenburger Gate"; to the left lies the "Jewish Memorial", whereas by turning right, the Reichstag with its Glass Dome is ready to be climbed...
Also along the walk: The Berlin State Library, The statue of Frederick the Great, Statue of General Gerhard von Scharnhorst, The Neue Wache (New Watchhouse), The Arsenal (now the Historical Museum)- many of which are Karl Friedrich Schinkel's great architectural achievements (e.g. "Neue Wache", the Schlossbrücke bridge and the redesigned "Lustgarten")
