Five minutes away from Alexanderplatz, lies the reconstructed historical heart of the German capital, founded in the 13th century. However, refurbished between 1997 and 1999, the area with its unmistakable appearance is now famous for its traditional German restaurants and bars and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Berlin. Left almost completely destroyed after air raids in 1944, the quarter was not reconstructed before the 1980's and as a winding pedestrian precinct. Altogether, the houses and streets were meant to follow their historical forebears as closely as possible in order to represent the "Old Berlin". Anyway, right at the centre of the district lies one of the most important sights, the 13th-century church "Nikolaikirche", restructed in 1807 by the famous architect Schinkel, now a museum of Berlin's history. Moreover, the statute outside the church in form of bear ( the symbol of the city: "Baerlein" meaning little bear) and
the baroque Knoblauchhaus in Poststrasse 23, dating back to 1760 and named after its original owner, Johann Christian Knoblauch, are definately worth a visit...
