Called "The pregnant Oyster" - somehow resembling a shellfish opening its upper valve to peer at the outside world... A wonderful resource for the people of Berlin, the House of World Cultures also leers on the history and heritage of the different cultures, such as Asia, South America or Africa, which are interpreted through stories, music, art, theatre, dance, film, literature, conferences, exhibitions and series of events. However, back in the 20th century, when the structure was erected as part of the International Building Exhibition,it was paid for by the City of Berlin as well as the government of the United States, focusing on the goal to foster a dialogue between the multifarious cultures alive in the world and in order to learn to understand each other.

Anyhow, back then, the curved and suspended roof of the building designed by the American architect Hugh Stubbins was actually an architectural wonder as open on both sides, seemingly standing strong without support. However, 23 years later the roof partialy collapsed. Its reconstruction was completed in 1987 , just in time for Berlin's 750th birthday- celebrations. In 1989, the faithfully-restored Congress Hall became Berlin's precious House of World Cultures.

Not only great art in all forms can be seen here, but you can also chill out at the water of the river and enjoy the great surrounding while drinking a coffee.
