Frederick II commissioned his friend, Georg Wenzeslas von Knobelsdorff with the building of the opera. Construction work began in July 1741 with what was designed to be the first part of a »Forum Fredericianum«. A full ten months before its actual completion, the monarch´s impatience led to the opening of the Court Opera with a performance of Carl Heinrich Graun´s "Cleopatra e Cesare" on December 7, 1742. This event marked the beginning of the 250-year-long cooperation between Staatsoper and Staatskapelle.

In the night hours of August 18, 1843 the Linden Opera fell prey to a raging fire that completely razed the building after a performance of a ballet. The new opera building, with Carl Ferdinand Langhans as architect, was ready for an opening by the following autumn.

After the collapse of the German Empire in 1918, the Opera was renamed »Staatsoper unter den Linden«.

After Hitler´s National Socialist Takeover in 1933, members of jewish origin were dismissed from the ensemble. Otto Klemperer, Fritz Busch and several elite musicians went into exile.

During World War II, the Opera house was twice completely destroyed by bombings. The first resurrection happened quickly, but the second attempt at rebuilding took a long time.

In 2007 the Staatsoper hosted the opera "Manon" with Anna Netrebko as Manon. Because the tickets were sold out a year beforehand (and were quite expensive), one performance was shown on a huge screen right next to the opera on the Bebeplatz. This public viewing attracted more than 20.000 people. Because of this huge success the opera has decided to hold such an event once a year now.

oh, and if you do have the money to buy a ticket, then beware that if you don't sit right in the middle you won't see everything that goes on on the stage.

same as deutsche oper: it's very expensive if you're not a student. but if you are, you can buy tickets half an hour before the performance for €12. with these tickets you can't choose where you sit, but most of the time you get really good seats!
