Founded in 1755 by king Ferdinand VI and finished in its current location under Charles III, the garden's purpose was never only the exhibiting of plants but, moreover, always also meant to provide a basis for the studying, classification and teaching of botanics- as well as the promotion of expeditions for the discovery of new plant species. Declared an Artistic Garden in 1942, the 20 acres of the gardens e.g. offer strolls through Greenhouses housing thousands of tropical, desertic and subtropical species...
