The world famous Museum Island, one of the most superb museum complexes in all of Europe, lies in the center of the city between the River Spree and its arm, the Kupfergraben. Its buildings home archaeological collections and nineteenth-century art.

The first building on the island, the Altes Museum (The Old museum), was built in 1830 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and was, at the same time, Prussia's first public museum, followed by the Neues Museum (The New Museum) in 1859, the Old National Gallery in 1876, the Bode Museum in 1904 and the Pergamon Museum in 1930.

However, seventy percent of the buildings were destroyed during the Second World War. In 1999, the Museum Island was added to the World Cultural Heritage List. It was in the same year that a Master Plan for the renovation of the buildings, the removing of war damage, the modernization of the technical equipment as well as the reunion and reorganization of the collections, divided between East and West during the Cold War, was finalized, planned to be finished in 2010, making the buildings suitable for the increasing crowds of visitors.

Highlights:
The front of the Old Museum, a masterpiece of classical architecture, dominates the Lustgarten at the Berlin Cathedral. Temporary exhibitions are displayed here as well as the Copper Engraving Museum.

The recently renovated Old National Gallery, which reopened in December 2001, was designed by Friedrich August Stüler and meant to resemble an antique temple on a high pedestal. On display are 19th century European and German painting and sculpture by artists such as Manet, Monet, Renoir, Caspar David Friedrich and Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

Reopened in October 2006 and on the northern point stands the Bode Museum, built in 1898-1904 by Ernst von Ihne, exhibiting paintings and sculpture.

An absolute success with the public is the Pergamon Museum by Alfred Messel, showing archeological findings from antiquity and the Near East besides, most importantly, the reconstructed Pergamon Altar.

The New Museum is still a ruin but its reconstruction is planned be completed by 2008.
