Not the biggest museum overall - but containg a surprising body of works, such as works by Manet, Liebermann oder Munch...

Found right in the heart of the city, the Kunsthalle opened in 1869 and was financed largely through donations - it may be rather unknown but it is definately worth a visit.

However, in 1997, an extension building offering 6.000 m of exhibition space has opened housing the new collection of contemporary art - "New Modernist" art from 1960 onwards.

Moreover, even the Bistro in the Gallery of Contemporary Art attracts with its nice view of the Binnenalster and Café Liebermann located in the historic columned hall is rather impressive, too....
