Amsterdam may be famous for its large number of museums and art galeries but that is not the reason you are here?! Ok, you more like got inspired by Pulp Fiction...
...quoting Vicent : "...it breaks down like this: it's legal to buy it, it's legal to own it and, if you're the proprietor of a hash bar, it's legal to sell it. It's legal to carry it, which doesn't really matter 'cause - get a load of this - if the cops stop you, it's illegal for them to search you..."
For over 20 years the coffeeshops, an unique Dutch insitution, have been doing business in the Netherlands. Their legal status? You can be put it like that : quasi-legal.
The reason why coffeeshops are tolerated after all is the idea of seperating soft drug users from hard drug dealers- by simply avoiding temptation.
Ok, here some practical tips for the shy-guys:
First: it is all good, don't be nervous, you will not be arrested and nobody will call your mum so: relax!!!
Find a coffe shop, as they are not allowed to advertise, you won't find a flasing sign offering Marijuana, go to the bar, ask for the menue, pick grass or hash, pay by weight or by value, sit down and enjoy: you have done it!!!
...something to tell your grandchildren about and probably essential for every trip to naughty Europe.
Recommendation:
Useful facts at The Hash and Hemp Museum, Oudezijds Achterburgwal 148 1012 - dealing with the history of weed and co., the museum offers a good deal of information besides the the ritual of smoking, e.g. about the role hash has played in history or its use as a material.
