The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, which was build between 1891 and 1895 according to plans by Franz Schwechten, is one of the best known churches in the whole of Germany.

Located in the center of the Breitscheidplatz on the Kurfürstendam, one of Berlin's major and world famous shopping miles, the location itself is a must.

Back in time, the church's construction was ordered by the Emperor Wilhelm II and in honour of his grandfather Wilhelm I. As far as the architecture is concerned , its neo-romanesque style reminds of the romanesque churches, typically for the Rhineland, the area around the river Rhine.

Once again, the Berliners stick to their hobby of coming up with "funny" and creative nicknames for their most famous buildings. In this case, the church is referd to as "Der Hohle Zahn" (the hollow tooth) due to the buildings's destruction during WWll, leaving only a ruin of the belfry.

Before the bombing in 1943, the original building was impressive in size, decorated with mosaics recalling the life and work of Emperor Wilhelm I inside.

After the war, a new church was built between 1951 and 1961, according to the plans of the architect Egon Eiermann and right next to the remaining parts of the old buliding which were kept as reminders of the horrors during the years of war.

Today, it's vestry and belltower are refered to as "Lippenstift und Puderdose" (lipstick and powder box).

It's constituents tell interesting stories themselves:
The cross of the annex is made of nails from the old Coventry Cathedral which got destroyed by Nazi bomb attacks in Britain. Nexct to it, an iconic cross of the Russian Orthodox Church and a graphic known as the Stalingrad Madonna by Lieutenant Kurt Reuber can be found. Altogether also symbols of the reconciliation between the three countries that were once at war.
