The designs for the building on Oranienburger Strasse were made by Eduard Knoblauch in 1857-59. After he became ill, Friedrich Stüler oversaw the construction, completed in 1866.
The New Synagogue is one of the most beautiful buildings in Berlin and with its Moorish-Byzantine style and two slim octagonal towers quite unique. The shimmering gold cupola over the entrance hall is striking and dominating the cityscape in the quarter.
Altogether, the almost 140 year old Jewish place of worship and largest and most important synagogue in all of Germany, was partly damaged during World War II once seating 3,000 in its no longer existing prayer hall. Today, after the restoration of the front section it is used by Centrum Judaicum (the Jewish culture, documentation, and special events Center).
During the pogrom night of 1938, the New Synagogue was set on fire but saved by the courageous intervention by the chief of the Hackescher Markt police station, getting the rowdy SA men to withdraw and having the fire extinguished.
