Where the German chancellor may meet Paris...
Originally called "Lindenmarkt" (linden tree market) and designed in 1688 by J.A. Nering, the square's present name "Gendarmenmarkt" refers to the regiment "gens d'arms", using the square between 1736-82 as a camp with barns. Anyhow, one of the loveliest plazas in Europe is bordered by the Schauspielhaus (playhouse) and the two dome buildings at each side.
The Schauspielhaus theater which was built in 181721 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel is today used as a concert hall. The Schiller Monument in front of the theatre was set up in 1871.
Along the plaza, the architecture has radically changed in recent years. Elegant restaurants, also visited by the German chancellor, are located next the former Prussian state bank, build in 1901 and the luxury Hilton hotel.
To summarize: A must do for every Berlin visitor, likely to be stunned by the ensemble of architectual harmony and beauty...In general: The mentioned architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) is altogether one of the foremost representatives of 19th century Prussian architecture and his many plans and designs present in and around Berlin.
