"Berlin Alexanderplatz" the famous novel by Alfred Döblin, published in 1929, deals with the proletarian face of this square - always a mirror image of the city; today showing traces of the ups and downs of its history.
However, this plaza, a former market place, was named after the Russian czar Alexander I in 1805.
Beyond all questions of taste Alexanderplatz is by far the most monumental inner city plaza in Germany, mostly known by the Televion Tower, the "World Clock", erected in 1969 as its central meeting point as well as the "Friendship among Nations Fountain" - all representatives of GDR design.
However, as the Berliners come up with a nickname for just about everything the fountain is known as "Nuttenbrosche" (hooker's brooch) among locals - guess everybody needs a hobby...
However, Alexanderplatz kept its suburban character up to the middle of the 19th century and it was not before the construction of the S-Bahn urban railway-network in 1882, followed by market halls, department stores and finally the underground railway in 1913, that the "Alex" developed and became the most important traffic and shopping centre for the eastern areas of Berlin.
After its redesign in 1928 and devastating damage during the war, Alexanderplatz acquired its present form from the 1960s.
To conclude, today half a million people transfer at "Alex" daily, providing a hustle and bustle somewhat adequate for a big city...
