In general: Checkpoint Charlie was a crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War and although the wall opened in 1989, the checkpoint remained an official crossing for foreigners and diplomats until 1990 when Germany was reunified and the booth finally removed...Today, a museum at the famous crossing reminds of a chapter in history, when a wall 3.60 m high, 1.20 m wide, weighing 2.6 tons and made out off thick reinforced concrete changed lifes, destroyed dreams and evoke some creativity..."Flucht macht erfinderisch" (escape makes creative), one part of the museum's exhibition deals with the many attemps of escape, the East German government just had not anticipated. Even though the wall was erected with great efficiency in 1961, Checkpoint Charlie was initially only blocked by a gate, which soon got smashed by the car of a citizen of the GDR followed by another approaching the "gateway to freedom" in a convertible, taking the windscreen down at the last moment and simply slipping under the barrier...Nevertheless, the place also reminds of shocking incidents such as the young man Peter Fechter, who was shot in the hip while trying to escape from East Berlin in 1962 leaving him slowly bleeding to death while his body lay tangled in a barbed wire fence.

until they build a mcdonalds around the corner from the pyramids (which I am sure will happen any day now), this is definitely one of the most disappointing tourist attractions I have ever been too. Like ever.

i agree, was very disappointed by this museum - it's so cramped inside that you often can't get close to the objects or the descriptions. seems like it badly needs some money invested in it but hasn't had any in years - some of the information still talks from the perspective of 15 years ago. a real shame since the stories they have to tell are as moving, fascinating and exciting as they come.

place can be horrible: tourists, tourists and even more tourists. shops and food stores have reacted in a bad way on this: cheap and bad food, soouvenirs and bazar-like yelling and harassment. museum is tight and narrow, many exhibitted pieces are of questionable origin. but still, it's worth going to get some impression of attempts to escape the gdr and the history and atmosphere that comes with it.
