Admission for guided tour: €8; €7 concessions
The façade of Domènech i Montaner's Concert hall with its bare brick, busts and mosaic friezes representing Catalan musical traditions and composers is possibly the most extreme expression of Modernista ever built. But this impressive sight is surpassed by the building's staggering interior.
Making up for its famously poor acoustics, decoration erupts everywhere: the ceiling centrepiece is of multicoloured stained glass; 18 half-mosaic, half-relief figures representing the musical Muses appear out of the back of the stage. On one side, massive Wagnerian valkyries ride out to accompany a bust of Beethoven.
By the 1980s, the Palau was bursting under the pressure of the musical activity going on inside it, and an extension and renovation project by Oscar Tusquets that spanned more than 20 years involved the demolition of the church next door to make way for the extension of the façade. The new part has subtler, organic motifs.
Guided tours are available in English, Catalan or Spanish every 30 minutes. It is advisable to buy tickets for the guided tours in advance.
